Web 2.0 Tool: Microsoft Teams
The ultimate messaging app for your organization, Microsoft Teams is the perfect place to collaborate, chat, share files and apps, and even send emojis! All are in one place, open, and accessible (Microsoft, 2022). I use this tool to communicate with my design team, organize big projects, review work and status, and provide quick training videos on design topics. We use Microsoft Teams on a fundamental level; some app integrations exist within the department channel. One particular benefit of Microsoft Teams is that it is a cloud system, which saves time in managing a server or computer space, file transfers can happen through one drive, and you can create a custom dashboard for departments or companies. Think of it like a website or blog. It is my favorite tool because of its diverse usage abilities.
For example, another benefit is that Microsoft Teams provides free education access to teachers and students for better collaboration and other tools to enhance learning (Microsoft, 2024). Imagine a dashboard set up for learning or integrated into an existing LMS. It may seem odd for what is typically a business app to be considered an educational tool. Web 2.0 tools can be described as a framework for (i) creating and transmitting knowledge and content, (ii) interacting through social networks, and (iii) collaborating with others. Additionally, (iv) editing and sharing content using various technological tools (Jonassen et al., 2008). Microsoft Teams provides all these options in a business setting and education.
This tool is not just on my computer; it is downloaded and synced to my computer. By doing this, I am providing access to any time of the day and anywhere. Mobile is a big thing. I use this for communication via mobile and quick views of something my team has posted. The immersive environments offered by Microsoft Teams are something to consider for distance learning. Rather than a Zoom group, you can have multiple, simultaneous conversations and communicate effectively in subgroups (Microsoft, 2024).
